Making an Impact: Our Past Initiatives

  • Running For Iftar

Running for Iftar was a special campaign in Spring 2022 to raise money for Iftar meals in the Palwan Community Center. UNGP President and proud Muslim, Saim Ali, ran the Brooklyn Half-Marathon to garner support for Uyghur youth celebrating Ramadan in Istanbul. The center hosted over 20 Iftar meals for hundreds of at-risk youth allowing them to break fast immediately after their Palwan classes ended. It was a great opportunity to foster closer bonds among the students and with their instructors.

  • Book Exchange

In Summer 2022, Uyghur NextGen began a book exchange with Darren Byler’s “In the Camps: China's High-Tech Penal Colony.” Our team distributed copies of the book for free asking that readers pass it on after they have finished it. The award winning book is based on multiple years of in depth research using interviews with dozens of survivors as well as camp guards backed by thousands of leaked Chinese government documents. It reveals the horrifying extent of China’s concentration camps and American complicity in them.

  • 2020 Uyghur Endurance Challenge

In the Summer of 2020 while the world had shut down in the face of the Covd-19 Pandemic, four friends organized an impromptu fundraising challenge to support the Uyghur Projects Foundation. Running for more than 24 hours and 80 miles, the group raised $13,000 from their local community to support Uyghur cultural preservation projects. The challenge inspired the creation of the now annual Uyghur Endurance Challenge and the formalization of its support for the Uyghur diaspora via the creation of the Uyghur NextGen Project.
